Do you know how to use the many computer keyboard shortcuts available? (Touch typists who’ve been well taught, please skip this message, but pass it on to all your two-finger typo friends!)
Even though I learnt to touch type many years ago, it was only in the last few years that a computer boffin friend pointed out the huge time savings to be made through learning keystroke shortcuts instead of relying on the mouse and multiple hand movements. Here are a few time management strategies to help you use your keyboard more efficiently:
1. If you’re in the middle of the line, and wish to return to the beginning of the line, press Home. For the end of the line, press End.
2. If you want to go to the beginning of a document, press Ctrl + Home.
3. To get to the end of a document, press Ctrl + End.
4. To highlight a word, hold the cursor over it and click twice.
5. To copy a piece of text, highlight it, hold down Ctrl then press C.
6. To insert it in the chosen spot, Ctrl + V.
7. To cut and paste, press Ctrl + X and then Ctrl + V.
8. To shift the cursor along the line one word at a time, hold down Ctrl + left or right button.
9. A double click on one word highlights it instead of dragging the mouse along the word.
10. Once a word is highlighted you don’t need to delete, just start typing. The highlight means it will delete as soon as the first letter is depressed.
11. Develop a ‘good savings’ habit! (But we’re not talking about money here – Ctrl + S) Save ALL THE TIME – every time you shift position, sit back and think, stand up or take a call.
If this is new to you, run this message off and keep it by your computer until the strokes become second nature.
There are many others. If you’ve got access to the Dummy books they usually have a selection of further shortcuts, and your other software programmes will have their own special ones. Take a few minutes to let your fingers learn a neurological pathway to them and you’ll save hours of time over a year.
Intimately, the post is in reality the freshest on this deserving topic. I agree with your conclusions and will eagerly look forward to your future updates. Saying thanks will not just be sufficient, for the extraordinary lucidity in your writing. I will directly grab your rss feed to stay privy of any updates.
