Are you all too familiar with the feeling of having to finish that next piece of work today? Do you feel obliged to start work early, stay late and/or sacrifice your weekends? Have you convinced yourself that a catastrophe will occur if you don’t get through all your work asap?
If this sounds like you then it might be time to step back and take a reality check (of course I mean this in the nicest possible way!). So next time your to-do list is about to take over your life (again!), try looking at the situation a little differently.
If you have already used your day to tackle your highest priorities then take the opportunity to reassess your workload. What will happen if you wait to do that piece of work that is jumping around waving its arms at you? Will the world end? Will empires fall? Unlikely – so give yourself a break, make an appointment with yourself to get the piece of work done at a time later in the week, and get out of the office at a reasonable time today!
Making sure you get ‘me’ time is every bit as important as getting work done. Don’t let that priority slip – your work will be all the better for it!
