As I was ironing a couple of garments prior to jumping on a plane to Sydney this morning the old phrase ‘A change is as good as a holiday’ flashed into my mind. It wasn’t because of the 3 hour plane ride – in my line of work that’s fairly common. It was what Mike and I had just been doing for the two days prior – and the fact that I was doing some ironing! (I LOVE paying my wonderful cleaner to do that job and yet I found I was quite enjoying wielding the iron this morning!)
Nearly seven years ago we made the decision to live in the country, although we’re still in easy driving distance of Auckland. We totally love our country lifestyle, two of our adult children and six of our twelve (and counting) grandchildren are currently living within 20 minutes of our new home and we’ve integrated fully into our small rural community. Plus our location is quite divine – a peaceful quiet beachside community. So – nothing’s going to change here in a hurry and nor do we want it to.
However, with the property market in New Zealand starting to look a little more active we’ve decided to check out the apartment market in the CBD of Auckland. Consequently we’ve just spent the last two days enjoying the city living and viewing property.
The point I want to make is how energised we both feel after doing things differently. We’re not new property buyers by any means so the experience itself is quite familiar. But it was the mere fact of varying our routine. It was simple things like discovering a new vegetarinan cafe with DELICIOUS food and bumping into old friends we’ve not seen in ages. (And realising that because we’ve been happily tucked away in the country that we’d lost touch with quite a few). It was about taking time to enjoy activities we’d not done for ages.
Nothing expensive, nothing startlingly different. Just a change in routine.
I leave you with the challenge – what can you do differently this week? A change truly is as good as a holiday!

Hi Robyn
It is true that variety is the spice of life and I love the way you embrace your life – You have a way of wrapping fun or adventure around everything, even if it is just routine.
You are a gorgeous Gran!
